What Kind of Paper Should I Use?

The most important thing about origami is that you start with a perfect square of paper.  Origami paper is easiest, but almost any kind of paper cut into a square will work.  Thick paper can be difficult.

We are collecting orange cranes.  Orange is the color of National Gun Violence Awareness.  If your paper is orange, or has an orange pattern, of even bits of orange, it will work.  Paper colored orange or with a message written in orange will work.

There is no limit to how big or how small the cranes need to be.  Some people like folding tiny cranes.  Some like really big cranes.  The bigger the crane, the stronger the paper needs to be.  Most of our cranes start as 3" to 6" squares.

  1. Our club Salem Origami Cranes in Salem, Oregon just mailed off 179 cranes for your project. We just had a similar installation at our Capital in Salem. The organizer chose to symbolize the action with Origami boxes. We participated in this one too. We also fold cranes for an organization (In the Folds of Peace) that takes cranes to Hiroshima every year. Their goal is to go one year with one million cranes.

Thanks for doing this installation for such an important issue.
